NDC EC must call IPAC meeting immediately – NPP, NDC agree
MAY 5, 2016 LISTEN

The main oppostion party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants the Electoral Commission to call a meeting immediately to discuss the implementation of a Supreme Court verdict, directing the removal of ineligible voters.

The NPP’s campaign manager Peter Mac Manu believes that the meeting will help the political parties come to an understanding on how to implement the ruling.

The Electoral Commission has already signaled that it would implement the court order when it opens the register for exhibition this June.

But this plan faces resistance from the main opposition party, the NPP which maintained that this plan violates the court order.

Nearly 600,000 names of deceased voters are to be removed according to the Supreme Court order. It also directs that the identities of those who registered using the NHIS card should be struck out and allowed to re-register using the proper mode of citizenship identification.

Peter Mac Man believes, in view of the court order, the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting should be called.

Chairperson of Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei
“I think the Supreme Court even said that, it should engage with other stakeholders to develop a roadmap towards achieving what the ruling says so IPAC should be immediately called”, he told Evans Mensah on Joy News’ Top Story.

The National Organiser of the ruling NDC Kofi Adams joined in the call for an IPAC meeting.

“How workable that order is I believe that when we meet at IPAC we will all discuss it” he said.

He expressed concerns about how the court order will be implemented. According to him, at least 15 million registration forms must be individually scanned to remove the names of those who used the NHIS card for registration.

The persons whose names are deleted would have to be informed too, Kofi Adams said.

“I do hope that when we get to the point where names are being deleted, people will not come and start crying and complaining that they are deleting names that should not be deleted”

Ghana goes to the polls in about 27 weeks.
But Peter Mac Manu is convinced the Electoral Commission can implement the challenges if it is committed.

He, however, criticized the EC for resisting change despite calls dating back to 2013. He said even the NDC had in 2013 called on the EC to audit the register.
