Tarkwa (W/R), May 1, GNA - The limited voter registration exercise is progressing smoothly and peacefully across 18 registration centres in the Tarkwa-Nsueam Constituency of the Western Region.

Most of the registration centres the Ghana News Agency visited on Saturday had received their registration materials and the process was ongoing.

Mr Nicholas Blay, the Registration Officer at the Cyanide Registration Centre, told the GNA that the exercise started at 0730 hours and as at 1000 hours, only four persons had registered.

At the Presbyterian Registration Centre, Mr Calvin Opare indicated that eight people had successfully registered and issued with their voters' identity cards as at 1040 hours.

Meanwhile, Mr Justice Gogoe, the Registration Officer at the Saint Paul's Registration Centre, said the exercise delayed because the biometric device was faulty but it was later repaired by the technician on duty and work resumed around 0905 hours.

Mr Kwaku Owusu Addo, the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipal Electoral Officer, told the GNA that the Commission had estimated to register between 5000 and 7000 people by the close of the exercise.

Although the GNA witnessed low turnout in the morning, the Municipal Electoral Officer expressed optimism that more prospective applicants would register later in the day.
