Bolgatanga, April 30, GNA - Mr Robert Ajene, a retired educationist, has called on eligible voters to abide by the electoral regulations and avoid twisting them in favour of a particular political party.

He said as a multi-party state, Ghanaians had to tolerate each other's views and avoid insults, especially on the airwaves, that consequently aggravated issues.

Mr Ajene, who is also the Upper East Regional Chairman of the Media Commission, made the call at the opening session of a two-day peace promotion workshop.

It was organised by the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese for the Tamale Ecclesiastical Province Partnership (TEPPART) with sponsorship from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).

TEPPART worked for civic education, good governance, justice and peace with a vision to promote peace and development for the people of northern Ghana.

The workshop was on the theme: 'Promoting Tolerance through Dialogue for Peaceful Elections in Northern Ghana,' and was attended by youth groups, Muslim and Christian women groups, the security services, political party representatives and the media.

Mr Donald Amuah, a development specialist, who gave an overview of conflicts in northern Ghana, said the high cost of judiciary services contributed to the inability of many people to access legal services that ultimately made them resort to violence.

He said education was very important in development and advocated for the need to use education to build national consciousness and identity among the youth.

Very Reverend Father Thaddeus Kuusah, the Executive Secretary, Peace and Justice Unit of the Northern Peace Council, took participants through conflicts, causes and ways to handle occasions of conflict.

Mrs Alice Dongyire Kuuire, the Co-ordinator of TEPPART, said sensitisation of the people during elections on tolerance was key to ensure peace in the three regions of the north.
