Buipe (NR), Oct. 07, GNA - The Central Gonja District Assembly in the Northern Region had been inaugurated with a call on members to work harder to push the development agenda of the district forward.

Madam Anita Desoso, a former National Women's Organizer of the NDC who deputized for President John Dramani Mahama to inaugurate the Assembly on Tuesday advised the Town and Country Planning units of the assemblies to do their work professionally to stop haphazard buildings.

She said haphazard infrastructure development in the country was worrisome, which needed the concerted effort of members of the assemblies, Town and Country Planning and the survey departments to collaborate to solve the problem.

Madam Desoso said haphazard building and planning in some parts of the country, resulted in flooding and outbreaks of communicable diseases and that there was the need to address the problem once and for all.

She advised the Assembly to device ways of improving on its revenue mobilization for development and desist from the over reliance on the District Assemblies' Common Fund (DACF).

She also appealed to the members to support the District Chief Executive (DCE) to raise the living standards of the people.

Mr Mumuni Shiraz Ibn Yacin, DCE for Central Gonja, said the District was established in 2004 and therefore lagged behind in some development infrastructure, which needed the attention of central government for infrastructure development to alleviate the plight of the people.

He said the District had the potential to be the hub of business destination including aqua culture, because of the presence of the White and Black Volta Rivers and called on the business community to relocate to the area for investment.

He said the White Volta had already attracted some investments such as the Arima Farms and Indian Company, the Buipe and Yapei irrigation projects, and that cage fish farming was also a promising venture worth investing.

He appealed to the Assembly members to come together with useful ideas for the District's development saying, 'We must hit the ground running and we must do all we can to bridge the development gap between our infant District and the older ones'.

The 40-member Assembly later elected Mr Iddrisu Ibrahim of the Kigbripe electoral area as the Presiding Member (PM) to preside over the affairs of the Assembly.
