Cash For Persons Affected By June 3 Floods
24.07.2015 LISTEN

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is to start cash payment to persons affected by the June 3 flood disaster from tomorrow Friday, 24th July, 2015. 13000 households in the Greater Accra, Volta, Ashanti, Western and Central Regions will each be paid 100 Ghana Cedis for the next three months.

Following the floods that resulted in the loss of property and livelihoods, and the death of more than 150 people, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection pledged to use its Emergency Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) programme to pay cash reliefs to persons affected by the disaster. Categories of beneficiaries include households which lost a bread winner in the flood and fire disaster, as well as those who lost their businesses and other belongings.

To select beneficiaries of this intervention, the LEAP Management Unit of the Department of Social Development did a mapping of the affected communities and administered questionnaires to affected persons. A ranking was done and the beneficiaries were selected.

Payment will start from Circle Odorna, where 1277 have been identified. Other communities in Greater Accra where beneficiaries have been identified are Gbegbeese, Glefe, Osu, Ashiaman and Teshie. The rest are Tema, Nungua, Kaneshie, Ada and Adenta. In the Volta Region, payment to affected persons will be done in Keta and Ketu South. Those in the Ashanti, Western and Central Regions will also be paid.

Payment will be done electronically by the Ghana Interbank Payment Settlement System (GhIPSS).

The Ministry if Gender, Children and Social Protection has already presented rice, cooking oil, mattresses and blankets to persons affected by the floods in Keta, Osu and Asokore Mampong in Ashanti.
