It appears there are cracks in the Effutu constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, as there are disagreements as to who should represent the party in the upcoming parliamentary primary in the area.

DAILY GUIDE can confirm that an attempt by the regional and constituency executives of the party to instigated a group called the Concerned Members of Effutu to organise a press conference to appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to give the former MP for the area, Mike Hammah, a ministerial appointment has backfired, as a new group has stepped forward to condemn the action.

Concerned Members of Effutu argued that appointing Mr Hammah as a Minister of State would pave way for him to contest the primary unopposed to enable him contest Alex Afenyo-Markin who snatched the seat from him in 2012.

However, the other group—the Democratic Outreach Network of Effutu—also of the NDC, has stressed the need for constituency, regional and national executives of the party to create a fair and an even playing field for all the four aspiring parliamentary candidates instead of supporting Mr Hammah.

According to the group, the party would need a young man to contest the sitting NPP MP for the area, Afenyo-Markin, who is also a young person.

The convener of the network, Nathaniel Papa Akeampong, said this at a press conference in Winneba.

He noted that the NDC in the Effutu constituency would need unity and hard work to snatch the seat from the NPP which was also making every effort to retain it.

Papa Akeampong appealed to the constituency, regional and national leadership of the party to provide a peaceful democratic process in the upcoming primaries.

'This would help build consensus in unity, and the ability to democratically elect a sure-to-win candidate for the 2016 parliamentary election. All the candidates should engage in clean and healthy campaigns since we are all fighting with a common goal,' he added.

Meanwhile, four people have so far declared their intention to contest in the parliamentary primary.

They are Mike Allan Hammah, immediate past MP for the area; Eric Don-Arthur, a journalist; Eric Ebo Appiah, and Henry Kwaku Bortise Ghartey, both educationists.
