The embattled National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Afoko has welcomed the peace sermon by the party’s flagbearer, even though he claims he was not invited to the momentous press conference.

There has been a widespread hue and cry for Mr. Afoko and party’s General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong to step aside whilst the police investigate the gruesome murder of Upper East regional Chairman of the party last week.

Many party supporters believe that events leading to the death of Adams Mahama were largely orchestrated by the two.

Meanwhile, the 2016 presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo at today’s press conference called on all to cease fire and rrefrain from the acrimonious public debates .

Many key figures in the party attended the event but the two prominent executives – Afoko and Agyepong – were missing.

But NPP Communications Director Nana Akomea told Joy News the absence of the two does not take away anything from the theme and tone of peace and unity expressed by the flagbearer.

Nana Akomea explained that the two national executive officers are in Kumasi, Ashanti regional capital on “private business”.

However, his claims have been countered by a text message emanating from Mr. Afoko’s office intercepted by Joy News.

Mr. Afoko stated categorically that he has been in Accra since yesterday but were not informed about today’s event.

“The chairman was neither informed, neither was he invited to any occasion. The chairman continues to pray for peace and reason to prevail in the party and will communicate to the party followers sooner than later…he urges all party faithful to keep their calm…thank you,” the statement read.

Nonetheless, a leading member of the NPP and former Chairman of the party’s legal committee, Nii Ayikoi Otoo told Francis Abban on Joy FM’s Top Story their absence “doesn’t mean much”.

According to him, the most important thing is the peace and unity preached by Nana Akufo-Addo.

People will not go against the call for unity, whether the two were invited or not, he explained.

Ayikoi Otoo said, since flagbearer has spoken, the “statement is what is important and necessary and not whether people were invited or not”.

It would have however been “desirable” if they were invited, he added.
