NPP Adams Mahama summons teary NPP to Bolgatanga
MAY 23, 2015 LISTEN

Virtually everybody who matters in the opposition New Patriotic Party is either in, or their way to, the Upper East Regional capital Bolgatanga.

The tragic death of the regional party chairman there Thursday morning rallied everybody including the flagbearer of the party who was on a tour of Europe to Bolga.

Nana Akufo-Addo had to cut his trip short and rush back to Ghana to participate in the burial and funeral ceremonies of the late Adams Mahama.

Mr. Mahama had acid poured on him by two assailants Wednesday and was confirmed dead Thursday morning at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

The motive for the murder is yet to be ascertained but only last week, there was a violent confrontation in the Upper East Region which resulted in the scuttling of a planned meeting between the party chair and general secretary and other regional executives of the party.

Adams Mahama had indicated he was not aware of the planned meeting and wondered why the two national executives will organise a party meeting in his region, with his executives and would not inform him about it.

Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong were said to have lodged an assault complaint with the Upper East police but also indicated that Adams Mahama was well aware of the meeting.

The controversy caused a bit of a stir in the party until Wednesday night’s acid attack on Adams Mahama.

One of the two suspects, Gregory Afoko, who is said to be a brother to Paul Afoko is in police grips.

The news about the death of the party chairman has left many shocked and has also led to some attacks especially in the Upper East Region.

But plans are underway to bury the slain regional chairman this morning.

A grave is being dug by young men in preparation for the burial.

The body has been moved from the Bolgatanga regional hospital morgue to Mr. Adams’ SSNIT residence.

Protesters are holding placards calling for unity in the opposition party which has transited from one crisis to another.

A large number of the placards are calling for the resignation or removal of the National Chairman and General Secretary from the party.

Messrs Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong who are Chairman and GS respectively have roundly condemned and accused of playing a role in Thursday’s unfortunate incident
