The Eastern Regional secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday began vetting the 89 aspirants and the incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) who are vying for the 33 parliamentary seats in the region.

The vetting, which is billed to end today, was chaired by the regional chairman of the party, Kissi Kingston and supervised by the National Youth Organiser, Sammy Awuku.

About 45 aspirants, including sitting MPs in the persons of Frederick Opare Ansah, who is going unopposed in Suhum; Samuel Ayeh Paye, Ayensuoano; Lawyer Samuel Atta Kyea, Abuakwa South; Esther Obeng Dapaah, Abirim; Abena Asare Akoto, Atiwa East; Amoako Atta, Atiwa West and J B Dapaah, Abuakwa North, from sixteen constituencies, were vetted on Tuesday.

Some of the aspirants, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE after passing through the vetting process, were glad about the questions they were asked by the committee members.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that some pressure groups from about five constituencies sent petitions to the committee during the vetting, seeking disqualification against some aspirants and sitting MPs.

The paper learned that the constituencies where tension seems to be   mounting are Abetifi, Afram Plains South, Abuakwa South, Abuakwa North, Ayensuano, New Juaben South and Abirim.

Sammy Awuku, the regional vetting supervisor, later told this paper that the petitions had been received and that the vetting committee would study them and consult the National Executive Committee of the NPP for final decisions to be taken on them.
