A Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has rubbished corruption claims leveled against the government by President of the Central University College (CUC), Prof Kwesi Yankah.

According to him, the learned Professor spoke like a person who was interacting with persons at a ‘palm wine bar’ and made statements which in his opinion are baseless.

“Now he is speaking like somebody sitting at a chop bar, under a palm tree drinking palm wine and because people are talking of corruption, he is also trying to say some…and without any evidence firing salvos at the President…” he said on Accra-based Oman FM.

Delivering a lecture at an event organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) the former Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Ghana said the Presidency has now become a haven for corrupt officials in the government.

“The Presidency is perceived to have become a comfortable refuge for officials suspected to have been involved in corruption and are under investigation…,” Prof Yankah said at the event.

But this claim, Koku said was just an attempt to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians about the government.

According to him, Prof Yankah lacks the hard facts on corruption allegations leveled against the government and expressed surprise that a learned person like the University Professor would speak like that.

To him, Prof Yankah has no right to criticize the government over corruption charges since "he, Prof Yankah never made critical comments against President Kufour who failed to act against corruption because he claims corruption started from Adam."

“When President Kufuor said this, I didn’t hear Prof Yankah say anything, I didn’t hear the Methodist Bishop of Obuasi say anything, suddenly the Professor Yankahs of this world have found their voice and making unfounded statements at the President…,” he said.

These abundant criticisms of the government on corruption, he said, informed his statements against the distinguished men in society and despite several calls to withdraw the comments against Prof Yankah, Koku Anyidoho declined.

“Yes, he is talking like someone sitting under a palm wine tree…I will not withdraw…,” he insisted.

Professor Yankah, Archbishop Palmer Buckle and several others he said are persons sympathetic to the NPP who are hiding behind their qualifications and status in life to fire the Mahama administration.

He thus called on his party to be up and doing and defend the government since according to him, the IEA only invited persons sympathetic to the opposition to come and "make baseless allegations" against the government.

He challenged Prof Yankah to make statements which "befit his position as an academic.
