Disgruntled NPP supporters besiege party office over affirmative action

Tens of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters have stormed the party's headquarters, protesting new proposals and guidelines for the upcoming party primaries.

The party issued a statement announcing dates for the primaries and also stated a number of affirmative actions the party intended to take ahead of the 2016 elections.

Part of the affirmative action include, male aspirants cannot contest incumbent female MPs.

The female MPs have also had their filing fees slashed in order to reduce the financial burden on them.

The proposal which was later adopted by the NEC of the party has received thunderous criticisms.

Pollster Ben Ephson insisted the policy is a "recipe for disaster" whilst the head of the political desk at Joy FM Evans Mensah said the party is "sowing the seeds for its own defeat."

The party appears to have made a u-turn.
Director of NPP Communications Nana Akomea told Joy News the policy is just a proposal and would not be forced down the throats of anybody.

He said men who wish to contest seats held by female NPP MPs would be encouraged to step down but if they wish to contest, they would not be barred.

In what appears to be a bold statement protesting the approved policy, some disgruntled supporters have besieged the party headquarters.

Wearing red armbands, the supporters are demanding that the party rescinds its decision to implement this policy.
