Concerned Citizens Of The Volta Region On Tribal Politics
23.02.2015 LISTEN

We wish to express our outmost disgust by certain individuals and politicians over the years by constantly attacking some tribal groupings in Ghana especially we the people from the Volta region. What is even more surprising is the loudest silence of civil society and the clergy in matters that borders on the very existence and dignity of we the people from the Volta region and the constitution of Ghana.

We wish to remind the good people of Ghana that as Ghanaians we have a constitution which states clearly that ''a person shall not be discriminated against on grounds of gender, race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, creed, social or economic status.

We the people of the Volta region see ourselves first and foremost as Ghanaians and always think about our country and constantly bother ourselves with how our great country can be the best of country among the community of nations.

It is with this national aspiration that we wish to condemn the comment made by Hon Osarfo Marfo that in his estimation 86% of the national resources are from what he calls five Akan regions and that only people from these regions should assume leadership roles in our country. He goes on to say that 'you control resources but does not have a say in the management of your country.'' He continued by saying ''where we talk cocoa we don't talk fish.''

The people of volta region contributes to the human resource of our country and this can be found in the various sectors of the national economy such as commerce, business, academia, security services etc. we need human resource to manage the resources that we have as a country, hence serious nations in the world over knows too well that the human resource is a very important ingredient for a nation. The volta region can mention Togbe Afede among others who have contributed so much to our beloved country.

The location of volta region by virtue of its location along the coast of Ghana can boast of the sea which is a huge resource and if properly exploited can be used to generate electricity, an example is the plant been build at Ada. The sea can also be used to produce salt which is a good resource for the petro chemical industry.

Volta region can boast of clay which is a very good resource in the ceramic industry. Apart from the resources mentioned, the keta basin has a huge oil reserve, more so the people of the region also engage in cocoa and coffee farming.

The volta region has a lot of institutions that have trained many prominent citizens in this country who are not volterians an example is Madam Theresa Kuffour who had her schooling in the volta region.

The region can also boast of a lot of tourist attraction sites such as mountain Afadza, Mountain Gemi, Wli water falls etc which contributes meaningfully to our GDP and many more.

The people of the volta region will not take kindly to the comments made by Osarfo Marfo, we can also vividly remember the comments made by Hon. Keneddy Agyapong that Ewes and Ga's should be killed just for their parochial political interest.

We wish to state that as Ghanaians we are one people despite our differences, let us always be guided by the usual OBONTO spirit ''I am because we are'', it is only then that we can build a beautiful country called Ghana. We urge all Ghanaians to speak against tribal sentiment because history tells us how dangerous this comments can be to a nation.
