VOTERS IN the Atwima Nwabiagya district of the Ashanti Region have chided Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) for the poor manner in which it conducted the votes transfer exercise scheduled to end yesterday.

Votes transfer is necessary to enable people who have relocated to places other than the places where they registered as voters, to vote in national elections.

Since last Wednesday, January 14, 2015, people in the Atwima Nwabiagya district who decided to get their votes transferred, had had difficulties with the exercise.

The EC had been bedeviled with a system failure for the past one week, making it impossible for votes to be transferred – a development which some of the victims have described as a ploy to disenfranchise them.

The affected people, led by Foster Amankwaah, a candidate for the district assembly elections in the Asonomaso electoral area in Abuakwa, are therefore appealing to the EC to extend the closing date, considering its own challenges.

When contacted, Paul Boateng, the Ashanti Regional director of EC, confirmed the difficulty but said he had no authority to say what could be done about it.

He described the situation as a nationwide challenge.
