Gabby Otchere Darko: Civil Society Groups more active than NPP now
07.11.2014 LISTEN

Former Executive Director of pro-opposition think tank, Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko is claiming that civil society groups are now more active in holding government accountable than the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Otchere Darko said on Oman FM's Boiling Point Thursday, that the party which is expected to keep the government on its toes is now dormant and has outsourced its responsibilities to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

“Ghanaians are looking up to, and they see, the NPP as the only hope to redeem them from the hardship but unfortunately we are not living up to this tag…” he said on the show.

He attributed the lax attitude of the party in recent times to the over twelve months of acrimonious internal campaign embarked upon by the party.

To him, it was not worth it that the party spent 'quality time' just on internal campaign and argued for the need for the NPP to consider limiting the amount of time it spends on internal campaigns.

“I think the about twelve months of internal organization is too much…,” Gabby said.

The dormancy of the NPP, he said, has also affected the Minority in Parliament which he claims has not been critical enough of the government's decisions and policies

What is bad about this extreme dormancy, Gabby said, is the fact that the NPP is not living up to its promise as the party representing the 'hope of Ghanaians'.
