Loyal CPP members wanted to break NDC-NPP duopoly - Samia

The Chairperson for the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP), Samia Yaba Nkrumah has called for more commitment among party members to break the duopoly of the two main political parties in the country.

Addressing the party's National Executive Council (NEC) at a conference held on Saturday in the Northern regional capital, Tamale, Samia Nkrumah noted there was the need for internal reforms that can allow greater assertiveness in breaking the two decade old stronghold on power by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the CPP chairperson, the greatest problem facing the party are "members, who are easily bought".

The party, she noted, needs  " members, who are loyal to our vision for Ghana... members, who cannot be bought".

The conference in Tamale is said to be biggest meeting since the 2012 elections by the party and members are expected to strategize for the 2016 elections and also to ensure the smooth running of the party.

The gathering will provide an opportunity for party leaders and members to discuss issues that affected the party's chances in the last election.

High on the table for discussion  are issues of adopting  new strategies in facing the 2016 election as well as setting a date for the elections of polling station executives of the party as well as congress that will elect new national executives and flagbearer for the party.

The CPP was Ghana's political vehicle used to secure independence in 1957. Banned after the overthrow of its first leader and founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the party has been struggling to re-assert itself.

The party is known for laudable development policies and abysmal electoral performances since 1992.

The CPP placed 6th in the 2012 Presidential elections after it garnered 0.18 % of total votes cast.
