Ghana's Supreme Court Set To Deliver Final Verdict Today
29.08.2013 LISTEN

After more than three months of televised hearing of the election petition case, the Supreme Court is set to announce its final verdict on Thursday.

The petitioners, who are made up of the 2012 presidential candidate of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) his running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and the chairman of the NPP, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey filed the petition to challenge the validity of the results of the 2012 presidential elections alleging some constitutional and statutory violations that favoured President John Mahama.

Lawyers for the petitioners argued that, there were gross and widespread irregularities at some polling stations and have called for the annulment of the election results.

However, the respondents, John Dramani Mahama, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) the Electoral Commission (EC) and Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan asked the court to affirm the EC's declaration and uphold John Mahama as President.

Meanwhile, though the ruling of the court is not yet known, experts say the nine-member panel have three options; letting the result stand, awarding victory to Nana Akufo-Addo or ordering a run-off between him and John Mahama in selected polling stations.

Ghanaians both home and abroad are expected to stay glued to seats and watch the historical event unfold.
