Cardinal O'Brien is a tip of Catholic hypocrisy-Tatchell

The Catholic Church has been accused of being a hotbed of homosexuality and homophobia after the most senior Cleric in the United Kingdom (UK) tendered in his resignation amidst the “inappropriate behaviours” allegations.

Peter Tatchell, the Director of the human rights organisation, the Peter Tatchell Foundation made the remarks following the resignation of Cardinal Keinth O'Obrien.

Cardinal O'Brien resignation has been linked to his hypocrisy because he has been condemning homosexuality; whilst himself is also accused of being a gay.

"In the light of these allegations, his stance looks hypocritical. He appears to have preached one thing in public while doing something different in private,” said Peter Tatchell.

Peter Tatchell was commenting on the resignation of Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Britain's most senior Catholic cleric, over allegations of “inappropriate” behaviours with male priests.

Tachell added that: "Cardinal O'Brien condemned homosexuality as a grave sin and was a long-time opponent of gay equality. He supported homophobic discrimination in law, including the current ban on same-sex marriage.”

Cardinal O'Brien is the most senior Roman Catholic cleric, in the United Kingdom. He resigned the post of head of the Scottish Catholic church following allegations of "inappropriate acts" against his fellow members in priesthood.

The Pope Benedict XVI, who is also headed to step down agreed the resignation of Cardinal O'Brien.

"Several other prominent opponents of equal marriage are guilty of double standards and vulnerable to similar exposure. They include anti-gay clergy and politicians,” added Mr Tatchell.

"It is estimated that around 40% of Catholic priests in Britain are gay, which makes the church's opposition to gay equality so two-faced and absurd.

"A significant proportion of all Cardinals worldwide is thought to be gay.

"Recent revelations in Italy have alleged the existence of a gay mafia within the Vatican, including senior Cardinals and other Vatican officials, and their participation in gay bars, clubs, saunas, chat rooms and male prostitution services,” said Mr Tachell in reference to the allegations that stained the Catholic church.

"The Vatican is shamelessly championing homophobia and the denial of legal equality to gay people, while hosting a hotbed of secret, guilt-ridden clerical homosexuality," said Mr Tatchell
