THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 4th September 1960

Sixty seven days after coming to power Patrice Lumumba, Prime Minister of the newly independent Republic of the Congo (now Democratic Rebuplic of the Congo), was dismissed by the President, Joseph Kasavubu.

Lumumba was later murdered in what a British newspaper, The Guardian, has described as "the most important assassination of the 20th century."
