Kumasi, Aug 30, GNA – The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially launched its national campaign for the December 2012 polls with a call on members and supporters to stand together to ensure loyalty and unity of purpose.
They should also avoid politics of insults, vulgar and intemperate language.
President John Dramani Mahama, who had earlier received overwhelming approval at the party's extraordinary national delegates congress held at the Baba Yara Stadium, expressed optimism about the party's electoral victory.
“God is walking with us and victory will be ours,” he told the cheering crowd of supporters at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.
He touched on the performance of the NDC within the last four years and said a solid foundation had been made for economic take off and transformation.
The President said he saw hope in the face of every Ghanaian and that he had no doubt that “together we shall make it as a nation.”
He thanked the party for his endorsement as flag-bearer and said it was with humility and gratitude that he accepted the nomination to lead it to battle.
Dr Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman of the NDC, underlined the need for hard work, commitment and dedication.
He said it was important for all to appreciate that personality attacks and vilification would not win them political power.
The General Secretary, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said he was confident of victory of the NDC in the Ashanti Region that has traditionally remained the hotbed of the opposition.
He urged the other political parties to allow the Electoral Commission to perform its constitutionally mandated job with regards to the creation of the 45 new constituencies.
Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Local Government and Rural Development Minister, outlined achievements made by government in the area of infrastructure.
National electricity coverage, for example, had gone up from 54 percent in year 2008 to 72 percent.
Mr Ampofo said a total of 1,700 communities now enjoyed power supply.
He announced that the government had secured a loan of US0 million from Brazil towards the reconstruction of the Kumasi Central Market.
Other speakers at the rally included Mr Paul Victor Obeng, a leading member, Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, the National Organizer, and Dr Cadman Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
