Independence Square ready for the late President's burial service

Accra, Aug 09, GNA – Preparations at the Independence Square in Accra for the burial service of the late President John Evans Atta Mills has been completed.

It is currently left with the preparation of the VIP dais which would be completed by Friday morning under the supervision of Commodore Steve Obimpeh (Rtd), Member of the Funeral Planning Committee.

Plastic chairs in the colours of red, black and white have been arranged orderly and the entire square decorated with red and black colours while the platform for the media has also been mounted.

Security personnel have been stationed to keep watch over the square.

The Committee has announced that the Independence Square would be opened to the public at 0630 on Friday, August 10.

A statement signed by Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Chairman of the Committee, said “those wishing to occupy the stands must do so by 0730, as access to the stands will be closed after that time”.

It said persons holding invitation cards with blue and red colour coding with “E” and “F” marked on them would be seated in the inner perimeter of the square.

“All persons holding such cards will be seated from 0745 to 0900.”

The statement said persons holding invitation cards marked “G” would also take their seats between 0730 to 0900, and there would be no access into the seating areas after 0915.

In addition, the Committee has identified convergence points, from which distinguished groups would be shuttled to the Independence Square from 0800.

The Judiciary from the Supreme Court, Ministers of State from the Castle Annex; Members of Parliament from Parliament House and the Council of State from their office.

Chiefs and Queenmothers to converge at the VAG Club House, Chief Executives of State Organisations and Chief Directors of Ministries, the El-Wak Sports Stadium.
