Parliament observes a minute's silence for late President Mills

Accra, July 31, GNA - Parliament on Tuesday observed a minute's silence at 1415 hours in honour of President John Evans Atta Mills, who died at that exact time a week ago.

Government on Monday, July 30, urged all Ghanaians, to revere the memory of the late President with a minute's silence and say a prayer for his soul, wherever they found themselves at that time (1415 hours) on Tuesday, July 31.

Therefore, at exactly 1415 hours, the Speaker, Mrs Justice Joyce Bamford-Addo, after dirges had been sung by the Parliamentary Choir, entreated members, who were bedecked in mourning attire, accentuated with red arm and neck bands, to observe the time and pray for the departed leader.

Moments after the observance and prayer, the House was adjourned to reconvene tomorrow, August 1 because they were scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Castle, Osu, to condole with him.

The House had in the morning suspended sitting to reconvene at 1330 hours to enable members to console President Mills' widow, Dr Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, at her Regimanuel Gray Estate residence on the Spintex road in Accra.

Contrary to expectation, Parliament did not announce the Vice Presidential nominee of President John Mahama.
