Ghana wet with tears as citizens mark 1 week of Mills' death

There is grieving across the country as Ghanaians mark the One Week of the death President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital.

The whole country is expected to go quiet for a minute in observation of exactly one week after the passing of President Mills.

In almost all regional capitals, church services have been organized to remember President Mills and pray for his soul.

Most people are clad in red and black while others have tied red bands to their vehicles to signify their mood.

A cross section of the public on the streets of Accra says though the events will disrupt their business they are eager to partake in the events.

At the Efua Sutherland Children's Park in Accra, Myjyonline.com's Dorcas Efe Mensah reported the entire park is a sea of red.

She said the occasion is solemn and is attended by past and present government officials, municipal chief executives, chiefs, and Ghanaians from all walks of life.

A special church service is currently underway at the Castle Gardens in remembrance of President Mills.

Castle correspondent, Seth Kwame Boateng reported that all who matter in the nation have converged at the gardens.

He said the mood is one of extra-ordinary sadness.
So many are those who have been grieving the passing of the late leader that productivity is said to have slightly fallen at most work places in the past week.

Joy News checks around the city reveals workers are expressing their grief in various ways.

Most public buildings are draped in red and black and some cars have pieces of red and black cloth tied to them.

Work is almost at a halt while employees at the heart of government business take the day off to mourn the late President.

The Joy News team also observed bands of people moving about town playing loud music.

Luv FM's Kwabena Apretwum reports the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumsai where a special church service was held was packed.
