Wa, June 20, GNA - A group of young persons known as Street Youth of Wa operating in the main lorry park at Wa have cautioned politicians not to rely on them in any quest to cause confusion in their bid to achieve their political ambitions in the December elections.

They warned that any politician that had such an intention would fail because they the street youth of Wa Lorry Park had chosen a path of peace and would not allow any person to use them to inflict pain on their compatriots.

The group made their stand known in a statement read by their chairman, Sufyan Mohammed, at a news conference in Wa on Wednesday.

They expressed appreciation for the role played by Youth Alive and Star Ghana in building their capacities by giving them knowledge to understand the beauty of diversity in democracy to be able to contribute meaningfully towards peaceful elections in December 2012.

Twenty-five of the youth received training and had been educating their peers on the need to participate fully in the elections and to also abstain from violence.

According to them, they were now enlightened and could no longer be used by anybody whether a politician, a chief or a religious leader to cause mayhem.

“It's the duty of every Ghanaian to ensure that the country remains peaceful before, during and after the elections thereby sustaining Ghana's democracy”, the group observed.

They said some of their members suffered a lot in the past in the hands of politicians and in some cases were almost lynched because they were working for an opposing political party.

“We were easily influenced by these politicians because of our low level of education and the low income we earned.

“Again, we lacked the understanding of diversity in democracy and the need to tolerate each other. We were never bothered about who got elected or not. We were only interested in what politicians brought or promised us.”

They appealed to the youth wings of the various political parties to join them in their campaign for violent-free elections.
