Intensify education to promote political tolerance

Kumasi, April 30, GNA – Mr Lord Larbi, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has asked the Inter-Party Dialogue Committees (IPDCs) to work hard to promote a political culture of tolerance in the country.

He said without this and consensus-building among all key political actors, the electoral process could suffer setbacks.

Mr Larbi cited pockets of skirmishes and intimidation seen at some biometric voter registration centres and said the committees need to step up their political education effort.

The people must be assisted to live peacefully with those who do not share their political beliefs.

He was addressing a day's workshop held for members of the Kumasi Metropolitan IPDC.

The programme was held under the auspices of the NCCE and the goal was to aid the members to have a better understanding of their responsibilities.

Mr Larbi asked the IPDC to work closely with identifiable groups, including students and religious bodies, youth and women groups as well as community leaders.

Nana Owusu Apeasa, Metropolitan Chairman of the IPDC, said Ghana should take a cue from other African countries that had been through political turmoil and avoid the pitfalls.
