The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Education, Betty Mould-Idrissu, for her alleged role leading to the payment of about GH¢58 million to businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome.

Mr Woyome, a financier of the ruling National Democratic Congress, on April 19, 2010 took a legal action against the government of Ghana, claiming over GH¢102 million in damages for breach of contract on the refurbishment of two stadia – Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra and the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi – prior to the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

According to the Auditor General's report for the year ending 2010, Mr Woyome received GH¢41,811,480.59 on June 4, 2010 as a settlement of the claims and another payment of GH¢17,094,493.54 on September 22, 2010, bringing the total payment to the NDC bankroller to GH¢58,905,974.13.

The Minority New Patriotic Party at a press conference on Tuesday, accused Mrs Betty Mould-Idrissu, who was then the Attorney General, of refusing to put up any defence whatsoever on behalf of the state and also for facilitating the payment to Mr Woyome. They want the government therefore to relieve her of her post.

The Minority is also demanding investigations into the whole process, Joy FM's parliamentary correspondent, Sammy Darko reports.

The caucus further wants an independent public inquiry into the case, to be televised live on national television, to avail the processes to Ghanaians and to settle the issue once and for all.

Meanwhile, the judgment debt which has raised eyebrows has had many, especially within the opposition NPP and former government officials, challenging the breach of contract claim by Mr Woyome.

They claim the entire deal amounts to a sleaze because Woyome had no contract with the government for which breach the state must pay damages.

A source close to the Education Minister's office told Myjoyonline.com the Minister will soon respond to the calls and claims.
