Sunyani, July 11, GNA – Nana Obiri Boahen, a New Patriotic Party stalwart, on Monday said the acrimony, vilification and the use of vulgar language in the campaign for the presidential slot of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) posed a threat to Ghana's fledgling democracy.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that: “If the NDC could not restrain the verbal aggression that characterized its campaign towards the party's presidential primaries, there is all indication that the party could replicate such uncouth behaviour in national elections”.

Nana Boahen, a former Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the NPP stated: “The NDC is marching gradually into the political grave since there is no indication that the party can come together considering the extent at which members threw insults at each other during the campaigns”.

The former minister at the Ministry of Interior, who is a lawyer, observed that the 1,500 policemen deployed to maintain law and order during and after the congress “demonstrated the violence within the NDC”.

“Despite its successful congress, there are still some gurus in the party who are fed up with the Mills administration and have resolved to go solo in the 2012 general election.

“No amount of persuasion can draw such members back”, he stated and admonished the NDC to get prepared to transfer power to the NPP in 2012.

Nana Boahen alleged that the NDC used state apparatus to fund its internal partisan politics which he said would worsen the living conditions of Ghanaians.

“It is obvious that the NDC does not care about the current economic hardships Ghanaians are going through”, he said, and advised Ghanaians to examine their current living conditions and “bring back the NPP in 2012”.
