President John Evans Atta Mills has met members of the Council of State at the Peduase Lodge, at which meeting, he gave an assurance that the government would not under any circumstance turn a blind eye to the aspirations and concerns of the people.

He said the government was duty bound to offer quality leadership which would resuscitate the economy, improve the quality of life of the people and also enhance democratic governance in the country.

Highly placed sources at the meeting, which was held behind close doors, said the meeting, the sources said, discussed the state of the Ghanaian economy particularly the inflationary trend, the merging oil industry in addition to the issue of employment and internal security including various flashpoints across the country.

According to the sources, President Mills underlined that the government was not in power on its own volition, but had been mandated by the people to husband the nation’s resources to provide facilities which would improve their lot.

The sources said he also told the meeting that the government was duly honoured by the recognition given it by the people, and pledged that the government would reciprocate the gesture by judiciously utilising the nation’s resources to promote the welfare of the people.

President Mills, the source said, reminded the gathering that the government had already identified the challenges confronting the economy and had initiated policies to reverse its stagnation and restore investor confidence.

The sources said President Mills enumerated several interventions that the government had instituted to stabilise the cedi and measures to boost food production and maintain law and order in the country.

President Mills pointed out that the government would be called upon to give account of its stewardship after its tenure of office, as a result of which it would not toy with the expectations of the electorate, while intimating that the government would also factor the views and opinions of the members of the Council of State in the formulation of national polices and programmes.

President Mills, the sources said, explained that since members of the body had been drawn from varied backgrounds and possessed considerable experiences in life and in business, the government would pay much attention to their concerns on national issues.

For his part, the sources said, the Chairman of the Council of State, Professor Kofi Awoonor, said the Council of State, would at all times offer ideas which would facilitate the economic well-being of the nation and foster peace and unity among the people.
