Veteran politician and social analyst, Mr. Joshua Attoh Quarshie has reiterated that in order for the New Patriotic Party –NPP to make a significant impact in the impending 2012 elections, the party has to re-endorse Nana Akufo Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia for the second time.
According to the former United Party (UP) firebrand, the pair during the 2008 electioneering campaign had the opportunity to market themselves to the masses and, would therefore, be politically prudent if the two is given the nod for the second time.
Mr. Attoh Quarshie said these in an exclusive interview with the paper Accra on Tuesday.
“Frankly speaking I still cannot understand why some group of people in the party is working hard against the two (Nana and Bawumia). And as I said before, it would be politically wise for the party to maintain the ticket and believe you me no serious political party on earth will attempt to replace it flag bearer just because he or she failed to win for the first time,” the octogenarian asserted.
“I say this without any fear of contradiction that if the party should stand firm and defy all odds to maintain the pair, the party will be smiling all the way to the Castle come 2012,” he maintained.
Mr. Attoh Quarshie while urging the party to remain resolute and forge ahead in unity also seized the occasion to caution the rank and file not to be complacent and think that the plummeting performance of the current NDC administration will help the NPP recapture power on a silver platter.
“Although it so glaring that the Mills led- government that promise prosperity for Ghanaians during the campaign is currently scrabbling in power, but that in my own candid opinion not enough for anybody to conclude that things will soft in 2012,” stated Mr. Attoh Quarshie.
Touching on the party's Chairmanship race, he observed that the names that had come up so far, in no doubt, confirms the assertion that the NPP is the most resourceful political party in the country in terms of human resource.
On a more sober note, Mr. Attoh Quarshie cautioned the party against internal bickering which according to him, is gradually gaining grounds in the party.
He stressed that failure to arrest the situation could lead to compromising party cohesion, which he added could make the party suffer another electoral defeat in 2012.
According to him, the party will be stronger should if the party hierarchy could gather courage and dialogue with the dozens of people who have shown interest to become the party's Chairman and by consensus chose one person.
He recommended that the position of Operations manager also be created for proper administration of the affairs of the party.
