INFORMATION AVAILABLE to The Chronicle indicates that a number of assembly members and government appointees in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), have been embarking on secret moves and underground campaigns to canvass support for the President's nominee for the position of Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Samuel Sarpong.
The Chronicle has gathered that some assembly members and government appointees have been lobbying members perceived to be hardliner, in order to secure their votes when the assembly meets to decide the fate of the nominee.
A spokesperson for the group championing the cause for the MCE-designate, Mr. Godwin Dela, who confirmed this to the paper, said about two-thirds of the members of the assembly had so far declared their intention to vote for Mr. Sarpong, who also heads the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Zonal Offices of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
He stated that the campaign embarked upon by his team, had so far produced positive results, and that it was their expectation that the approval of all the 87 members of the assembly would be secured, by the time vote was cast.
Asked why they had taken the trouble to campaign for the nominee, who is yet to be assessed, Mr. Dela noted that the credentials of the nominee, coupled with his rich experience in management and administration, have been the driving force behind their crusade to get Mr. Sarpong approved without any difficulty.
According to him, the complexities involved in the implementation of the local government system, more particularly in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, demands someone who is adroit in terms of administration, to ensure the smooth running of the various sub metros, adding that Mr. Sarpong's long years of experience, in financial and managerial administration at the Serious Fraud Office, makes him the perfect man for the job.
He also denied initial rumours doing rounds that government appointees of the assembly had intended to oppose the nominee's approval.
