Abide by the electoral laws and regulations to maintain peace - Deegbe

Reverend Dr. Fred Deegbe, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, has called on members of the public to comport themselves and abide by the electoral laws and regulations to help maintain the peace.

He asked the citizenry not to be carried away by the fraudulent acts of "unscrupulous politicians" who would use any means to canvass for votes.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at the “Unity Walk 2008” organised by Oasis, a Non-Governmental Organisation in Accra on Saturday.

Rev. Deegbe said those negative acts were against the Christian faith and the electoral laws of the country and that in choosing leaders, Christians should not exchange the "God-given freedom for pottage".

He said peace was a costly and delicate commodity necessary for development hence the need to press home the massage on peace, unity, and love as the nation prepared for its general elections in December.

Rev. Deegbe said countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote D'Ivoire had paid for their omission of peace which resulted in conflict, destruction of property and political upheavals among others.

He called for the use of dialogue and consultation as well as being tolerant, fair and patient to one another which were necessities of peace.

He said political parties who adopted insults and other negative methods of campaign did not have the interest of the nation at heart and called for Ghanaians to guard against such groups.
