Mr Emmanuel Ayitey, an opinion leader at Sarpeiman, near Amasaman, in the Ga West District of Greater Accra, has appealed to leaders of political parties leaders to impress upon their supporters and sympathizers to stop defacing or destroying posters and billboards of their opponents.
Mr Ayitey, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday at Sarpeiman said the practice where some supporters choose to take the law into their own hands by destroying posters and billboards for reasons best known to themselves is causing tension in the area.
He appealed to party leaders to advice their supporters and sympathizers “to stop the behaviour to ease the tension in the constituency”, saying that, “what the country need now is peace to achieve its developmental agenda”.
He asked the people in the area to report anyone defacing or destroying posters and billboard to the appropriate authorities for action.
Mr Ayitey appealed to the Information Services Department and the National Commission for Civic Education to educate communities about the regulations and laws guiding elections.
“They should be told that culprits can be prosecuted for defacing or destroying posters and billboards of any political party”.
He said politics is not a war between the ruling governments and the opposition parties, but how to sell ones ideas to the electorates so that they can make their own choices during elections.
