Accra Breweries Limited (ABL) is to invest GH˘60 million in its operations in the next five years.

The investment, which includes a GH˘20 million modern and automated packing line, would go into expanding production and distribution network.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr Grant Liversage, said the investment was in line with the company's belief in the economy of Ghana.

“We are confident about the future of Ghana and we are investing a lot of money,” Mr Liversage told a team of journalists from the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) who were on a facility visit at the premises of ABL last Friday.

The journalists had ample time to interact with the top management of the brewery company, which is controlled by the South African brewery giant, SAB Miller plc.

Discussions ranged from the economy to operations, marketing, national policies on the industry as well as the outlook for the company.

The managing director said the company was still pursuing its policy of using local raw materials, and that currently 35 per cent of its raw material needs were locally sourced.

The company said it supported an alcohol policy for the country and would collaborate with any agency that was mandated to draft one for the country, saying “the absence of an alcohol policy means very little is being done about responsible drinking.”

However, Mr Liversage said ABL's parent company, SAB Miller had developed the www.TalkingAlcohol.com website to help promote responsible drinking.

The Technical Director, Mr Richard Edzeame, who conducted the team around the main facilities of the company, said the new line which would produce 36,000 bottles of drinks per hour was expected to be completed at the end of the first quarter of next year.

In a related development SABMiller the parent company of ABL, has launched a website to provide a comprehensive guide to alcohol- from how beer is made to how alcohol impacts on the body.

The website www.TalkingAlcohol.com is aimed at educating people to drink responsibly.

The pages give reminders of things to consider on a night out, including when drinking alcohol.

The site also provides consumers with factual information on the alcohol content, cereal grains, and carbohydrates found in over 100 beer brands around the world.

Visitors to TalkingAlcohol.com can listen to independent alcohol experts who will periodically explore issues relating to health, parenting, binge-drinking, drinking and driving, and policy approaches.

To develop TalkingAlcohol.com, information from a wide range of reputable sources was used.

International experts were also consulted and their feedback has been positive, seeing the site as a good resource for the public regarding the common health considerations about drinking alcohol.

One expert, Dr Alfred I. Neuget, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, said of the site.

"I was impressed. The content was very readable and relatively simple for a layman, yet not trivial."
