Members of the Islamic Charity Centre for Human Orientation (SCCHO), an Islamic advocacy group, on Sunday called on Nana Addo- Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to choose Hajia Alima Mahama as his running mate for the December elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Hajia Ida Jeibrel, Chairperson of SCCHO, noted that Hajia Mahama, who is currently Minister of Women and Children's Affairs, was in the best position to bridge the gap between the northern and southern sector.
“As a Minister for Women and Children Affairs, she has worked with many women groups both Christian and Moslem. As a result she has won our affection and will be able to win electorate from both religions for the Party,” she said.
Hajia Jebrel said men had been at the forefront of women affairs, especially in leadership positions.
“The time is long overdue for a male president to appoint female as Vice President to support him.
“In the traditional governance, the king is supported by the queen”, she held.
Hajia Jeibrel also called on other political parties who were yet to select running mates to select a woman.
She said SCCHO would rally behind any party that nominated a woman as vice president.
Hajia Alima Mahama is a Barrister of Law from the Ghana Law School and holds a Master of Art degree in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, Netherlands.
She has been the Member of Parliament for Nalerigu-Gambaga Constituency in the East Mamprusi District in the Northern Region.
Hajia Mahama also served as the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development from May 2001 to April 2003 and also Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and President's Special Initiatives from May 2003 to January 2005.
