THE KWAME Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has registered its dissatisfaction about the conduct and aftermath of the NPP primaries.
The branch has consequently drawn the attention of the party leadership to what it describes as an unfortunate development calling for necessary action to remedy the situation, before it gets out of control.
Mr. Kofi Asante, the branch chairman, who raised the concerns during an interaction with The Chronicle, warned and urged the
leadership to “amend our ways before it is too late”, and since “a stitch in time saves nine”
He pointed to the indiscipline which is creeping into the party and affecting the calibre of contenders for the parliamentary slots, and suggested that rules and regulations of the party must be allowed to work for the good of the party.
The Chairman, indicted the Vetting Committee which he accused of sparking off controversies because it failed to thoroughly scrutinize the background of some of the aspirants.
Mr. Asante also accused some constituency chairmen of encouraging non-starter contestants to file their nominations either for financial gains or to spite incumbent Members of Parliament.
He said it is worrying to see how hooliganism has been encouraged by some power seekers who do not qualify to contest for seats in the various constituencies.
The Chairman said disturbances at primaries in Tema, Bekwai and the Aburi-Nsawam constituencies among others, where one of the contenders disregarded rules and regulations of the party and filed his nomination, should send warning signals to all officials directly involved.
According to Chairman Asante, the violence associated with some of the primaries had given the main opposition party, the NDC enough ammunition to castigate the NPP as a violent party.
He called on the leadership of the party to sit up and stop the carnage since these incidents are being reported in the media to the detriment of the party.
Meanwhile, Mr. Asante has appealed to the party's flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to be steadfast in the choice of his running mate and not allow any forces to sway him from his set goals, saying
“The choice must be his own and not coerced, forced or persuaded in any way to thread the path of destruction and chaos”, Asante advised.
