The new train procured from Poland and meant to ply the Tema-Mpakadan railway line has reportedly been involved in an accident during a test run, authorities have confirmed.

The first train, part of a two-train deal with Poland, arrived in Ghana about two weeks ago.

Engineers had since been working to assemble and install the train on the tracks for testing.

Minister for Railways Development John Peter Amewu announced on Tuesday that installation was completed and tests were due to start.

However, during an initial test run today in the Asuogyaman District, the train derailed from the tracks, according to sources.

The extent of damage to the train and infrastructure is still being assessed.

The accident comes as a setback for authorities who were hoping to commence commercial operations on the line using the new trains soon.

The multi-million dollar procurement deal is aimed at revamping Ghana's antiquated rail transport system.
