The People’s National Convention (PNC) has urged the security agencies “to promptly investigate and take necessary legal measures against the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for physically assaulting a female colleague”, who also serves as Northern regional treasurer “within the same party”.
Hajia Shamima Yakubu sustained injuries on her face and eye.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Janet Nabla, the party said the incident “reflects a larger issue of gender inequality and violence against women in Ghanaian politics”.
“It is essential that all political parties take a firm stance against such behaviour and commit to creating a safe and inclusive environment for women to participate in politics”, the PNC suggested.
“It is crucial for all Ghanaians, including civil society organisations, religious bodies, gender-based NGOs, and the media, to actively condemn these acts and advocate change”, the party charged, adding: “Increased awareness and public pressure can help hold parties accountable for their actions and push for the necessary reforms to protect women's rights and safety”.
Furthermore, the PNC said, “it is important for the government to take a proactive role in addressing this issue”.
“Strong legislation and policies should be put in place to protect women in politics and ensure that those who commit acts of violence are held accountable. Without such measures, women will continue to be discouraged from participating in politics, and their voices and contributions will be marginalised”, the party observed.
In conclusion, the PNC said it “stands firmly against any form of violence against women in politics and calls for immediate action to address this issue”, noting: “Women's participation in politics is crucial for a thriving democracy, and it is time to put an end to the culture of violence and intimidation that hinders their involvement”.
The party said a future PNC government will pass laws to prohibit political parties that would engage in intimidation and violence against women from filing with the Electoral Commission and participating in elections. “This is because, if a party cannot ensure the safety and well-being of women within their own ranks, they would struggle to safeguard the rights and interests of the 51.3% female population in Ghana”.
