CPP AR: CPP re-affirms support for NEC decision
JAN 9, 2024 LISTEN

The Regional Executive Committee (REC) of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in Ashanti Region has re-affirm its support for the position of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Party.

At a NEC meeting in Kumasi in December 2023, the Council forced the Chairperson and Leader of party, Nana Frimponmaa Sarpong Kumankuma, out of office after some national executives voluntarily resigned.

An interim committee was formed to steer the affairs of the party until Congress elected new substantive national executives.

Though the Chairperson insists she remains the leader of the party, citing illegality in the decision of NEC, the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee says it supports NEC’s decision.

Addressing the media on Monday, January 8, 2024, the Regional Secretary, Abdul Salam noted that “our faith, trust and confidence in the Interim Council put in place by NEC, and its efforts since its inauguration in December 2023 have inspired hope in the rank and file in the region. We assure the Interim Council of our full support and readiness to work in cohesion and co-operation to redeem the glory of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

“As stipulated by the Constitution of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the National Executive Council (NEC) is the next highest decision-making body of the Party after the National Delegates Congress. This means that decisions of NEC can only be changed by the National Delegates Congress, and therefore, its appointment of an Interim Council to steer the Party’s affairs in the interim is legitimate and legal.”

The Regional Executive Committee warned that it would sanction members of the party who will defy the directive to support the Interim Council.

“As we entreat all members of the Party in Ashanti Region and across Ghana to respect the decision of the National Executive Council, it is important to state that the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee will take disciplinary action(s) against any member who breaches the constitution of the Convention People’s Party (CPP). Any member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in Ashanti Region who engages or participates in illegal activities of the former National Chair and Leader, Nana Frimponmaa Sarpong Kumankuma who has been removed from office will be sanctioned according to the Party’s constitution.

The CPP argues that it is the only alternative to better the lives of Ghanaians.

“It is an open secret that the Convention People’s Party (CPP) is the only credible alternative that has social welfare state policies and programmes to improve the lives of Ghanaians”.

“We therefore call on members of the Party in the Ashanti Region and the country to work closely with the Interim Council in executing its task of re-organising the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for internal elections to improve its fortunes in the general elections,” Abdul Salam stated.
