The People’s National Convention (PNC) has released a statement to condemn the attack on United Television (UTV) by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) thugs.

In its statement, PNC described the attack that occurred over the weekend as barbaric, insisting that it must not be entertained as it will obstruct the public’s right to be informed.

“Attacks on the media not only undermine democracy but also hinder the public’s right to be informed about matters of national interest,” the PNC statement signed by First Vice Chairperson Hajia Hajara Ali Musah said.

In an appeal to the government, the PNC has called on security agencies to take necessary steps to protect journalists and media houses in the country to ensure they are able to work without fear of being attacked.

“We call upon the relevant authorities to fast track its investigation into this incident, identify those behind the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.

“It is imperative that steps are taken to ensure the safety of journalists and media personnel, as well as the protection of media outlets, enabling them to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or violence,” the PNC statement issued on Monday read in parts.

It continued, “As a political party, we reiterate our commitment to promoting and safeguarding press freedom in our nation.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the rights of journalists, advocate for a free and independent media, and raise public awareness about the importance of a vibrant and uninhibited press.

“Together, we can ensure that journalists can exercise their rights without interference, ensuring a well-informed and empowered citizenry.”

Since the incident, the ruling New Patriotic Party has distanced itself from the actions of the hooligans, stressing that the party did not sanction the attack.

For the NDC, the hooligans must be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other groups.
