In June, more than 175,000 asylum seekers were awaiting a decision in the UK.

That is 44 percent more than in the same month last year.

The number of pending asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record level.

As reported by the BBC, citing figures from the Home Office in London, more than 175,000 applicants in the United Kingdom were waiting for a decision in June.

The number is 44 percent higher than in the same month last year and higher than at any time since counting began in 2010 according to current standards.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had promised to clear the backlog of applications submitted more than a year ago by the end of 2023. But this goal could only be achieved by multiplying the previous processing speed, as the BBC calculated.

According to this, around 2000 cases per month were recently closed - in order to keep Sunak's promise, with almost 68,000 old cases, more than 11,000 applications per month would have to be processed in full by the end of the year.

Even with the promise to prevent irregular entry by boat via the English Channel, the balance of the conservative government under Sunak is more than mixed. More than 19,000 people have crossed the English Channel to Britain on small boats this year. Although that is less than in the same period of the previous year (21,000), the slight decline is by no means a success.
