The Spirit of Halloween!

25.10.2010 LISTEN
By Melanie Miller

Do you ever wonder why there is a Halloween? Believe it or not, this is considered, The Day of The Dead. and we celebrate the dead. Yes, this is true. Some folks love Halloween and decorate their homes, businesses, and office space with Halloween decorations. Some people that are very religious do not celebrate The Day of the Dead(known as Halloween or All Hallowes Eve).

Many folks love to dress in costumes at halloween parties or just dress up and hand candy out at home. I..myself usally dress as a witch but this yr. I am dressing as a witchy ballerina. My costume was fairly expensive but one does not have to fork out a fortune, they can go to consignment stores, yard and or garage sales to find nifty costumes or simply make one theirselves or have a friend or family member to make them for the person or persons.

I used to make my sons costumes with a needle and thread by hand instead of a sewing machine and one time, I hand sewn a Batman costume for one of my sons. He loved his costume and I did make some Halloween crafts for the tree and even bought some Halloween gifts as well. I would say that Halloween is about my favorite holiday. You can make all sorts of treats with a family member or even a friend or go it solo and make cookies and treats for others, but I would not advice you make them for children that come knocking at your door for halloween treats. In some states it is illegal to do so. You can make treats for children that you are related to, or for your own kids, and this should be acceptable.

Halloween seems in this day and age, so commerical. Children and Teen-agers alike go to businesses and get their candy and treats at these places. Whatever happened to home made costumes such as my cousins would wear as their mothers hand made or sewn their costumes on a sewing machine. I know my grandma would make costumes for me, and we loved wearing them during Halloween.

You can not go door to door late at night any longer, and why this is, I am not completely sure of, but I recall when I was young, that we would go door to door from like 7 p.m. til it was very dark, about midnight and we would still, my cousins and I go trick er treating. It is just not like it used to be many yrs. ago. I think one main reasons is for safely reasons, as their are many unkind folks in this world and may wish to harm another, and besides being alone or with a group of people may not be entirely safe but if you do trick er treat, a group with parents or other like minded adults is best to have with you, when it is light outside, and if this be the case, that kids and children go out later, when it is dark outside...be sure they bring a flashlight with them as well as the adult or parent(s) should provide a flashlight as well, if going in the dark hours of the night. There are many folks that are kind and want to celebrate Halloween and want to see the smiles on children's faces, as they accept candy from them.

All in all, Halloween should be a fun time for everyone whom likes this festive time of yr. Not all people enjoy handing candy out and if you do not see a light on, then go to another home that has a porch light on, and then collect some candy from them. Be sure that your parent or parents examine the candy first before trying any of it, teenagers and kids alike. Sometimes there maybe glass and other things in it, that is not good for the body. I know, I always checked my sons candy before they ate any of it.

Well have fun on Halloween if you go trick er treating with some friends, and always thank the person that hands you candy. Be polite to others and they will be polite to you. Be sure to go with an adult or adults, and also be sure, your children are with other children that go door to door. Just have fun and be careful on this festive night and enjoy the spirit of Halloween!
