The National Union of Ghana Students in Nanjing together with the African community came out in their numbers to celebrate the 59th Independence Day Anniversary in China.

Daniel MacDabara who is President of the union brought goose bumps to all and sundry gathered at the event with his speech “THE BLACK STAR OF AFRICA”. He spoke of Ghana and Africa with passion that brought happiness to most of the people who were there for the event. Venue for the celebration was Novotel, Nanjing Central.

Daniel MacDabara dressed in his traditional smock attire dazzled the audience with a highly spirited message on Pan-Africanism. He emphasized on the need to remember that Ghana’s independence had a lot to do with Africa and not just Ghana only.

The leader of the Ghanaian students proved to the audience that Ghana’s independence really is about the African people through the words of Dr.Kwame Nkrumah. He also used the national flag of Ghana to cite a reason why the black star is not below or above but rather in the middle of the Ghana national flag. He spoke to the people and mentioned great names like Madiba Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jnr ,Patrice Lumumba, Julius Nyerere, Nnamdi Ezikiwe, Chief Luthuli and others.

He said, when you delve deeper into annals of history, you will notice that all these names adored Nkrumahs ideology of Africa’s emancipation. So when Ghana gained its independence, most of these allies came to pay homage. He cited Dr.Martin Luther King Jnr’s visit to Ghana as an example. After Dr.King went back to the states, he gave a sermon “The birth of a new nation”. He referred to that nation as Ghana.

Mr. MacDabara stressed on the need why Ghanaians must not limit the Independence Day to Ghana only. He said “Once we understand the power behind Nkrumah’s words that our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up to the total liberation of the whole African continent, then we can take our rightful position on the African continent. He said “… when we (Ghanaians) limit our independence to Ghana and “The big six”, then the famous speech of Kwame Nkrumah on Independence declaration was useless, baseless and bunk. Then the symbolism of the black star in the middle of our national flag is a fallacy to Africa’s emancipation ideology.

The young Ghanaian student leader also took time to advice that no youth in Ghana should jeopardize his/her life for the parochial interest of any political party come November 2016 General elections. He spoke with passion that the Ghana we speak of and beat our chest with pride was not made by one political fraternity. From the north to the south our ancestors toiled and struggled for our independence.

He questioned that even human life is not permanent how much more the period of political governance of a party? Why should any youth jeopardize his life and ambitions for the parochial interest of a political party? He encouraged his members to send messages back home to Ghana, to influence and encourage vociferous youth to be good citizens come November General elections. He told them that studying abroad makes them models and mentors to some of the youth and hence their advices have the tendency to influence their friends and families in Ghana.

Daniel MacDabara also thanked the African community for coming out to celebrate the 59th independence Anniversary of Ghana. He used the opportunity to congratulate Ghanaian students who are graduating this year. He did not miss words when he urged them to go back to Ghana and help in their own way for God and country.
