Rugby Rugby Updates: Ghana Rugby Match Programme Changes

The general public and the media reminded to kindly note that the international friendly match between Ghana and Togo in Lome on 24 September 2016 has been replaced with a Ghana Eagles (National Rugby Team) A vs. B team to be held at the Accra Sports Stadium at 2pm.

The replacement was done due to exciting Rugby developments in the region with a pending WARS (West Africa Rugby Series) tournament to be announced soon.

The period of September to December 2016 proves to be very exciting Rugby times for Ghana Rugby with an international friendly match between Ghana and Togo held in Accra on 4 September, followed by national men’s 15s Rugby trials held at the Accra Sports Stadium on 17 September.

A full programme is on the cards with tentative events planned as follows:

24 September: National Ghana Eagles A vs. B Teams Trials Match

1 October: U20 men’s 15s & Women’s 7s Trials

1-3 October: Ghana vs Niger Friendly International, match day 2 October

10 October: National Ghana Eagles A vs B Teams Match 2

22-23 October: Reserved for possible WARS Tournament

29-30 October: Reserved for possible WARS Tournament

12 November: Start of GRCC (Ghana Rugby Club Championship) - To be confirmed

More detail and clarification will be issued prior to each event. Detail will also be announced via the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Facebook Group Page (Rugbygh).

Two Ghana Eagles Men’s 15s A vs. B matches are planned for 24 September and 10 October in preparation of the possible kick-off of the WARS (West Africa Rugby Series) programme this year.

According to Mr Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Ghana Rugby is in an early stage of development but that does not deter him and his team to have a vision of entering the world stages of Rugby. To this end the first ever men’s 15s U20 and Women’s 7s Rugby trials will be held in Accra on the 1st of October 2016.

Mr Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) and Founding Member and President of WARS (West Africa Rugby Series), said that the development of competitive Rugby in the sub-region has led him and other presidents in the region (Nigeria and Togo) to establish WARS and that the international friendlies were part of Ghana Rugby’s preparation for exciting times to come.
