Accra, Sept. 21, GNA - The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has held a meeting with some national sports federations to discuss Ghana's preparation in the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in the Bahamas ahead of the deadline for the submission of Team Size on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

The federations were briefed by the Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Richard Akpokavie and the Deputy Secretary General Rev. Richmond Quarcoo, about the format and objectives of the Games.

Present at the meeting were representatives of the Ghana Swimming Association, Ghana Rugby Association, Ghana Judo Association, Ghana Boxing Federation, Ghana Athletics Association, Ghana Tennis Association and the Ghana Volleyball Association.

According to the Games Organising Committee, the competition will feature eight sports. The games will introduce 2 new sports, Beach Soccer and Judo while dropping Archery, Lawn Bowl, Weightlifting, and Squash. Cycling will also make a return during these games. Beach Volleyball may also be recommended into the games but it is still pending.

The sporting disciplines to be represented are Aquatics, Athletics, Beach Soccer, Boxing, Cycling, Judo, Rugby sevens, and Tennis.

The CYG, which will feature up to 1300 athletes aged 14-18, was one of the issues on the agenda for the abortive GOC ordinary Congress on July 23, 2016.

It will be recalled that Ghana won its first gold medal at the CYG when long jumper Richard Seklorwu clinched first place in his event at the Samoa 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games.
