Accra, June 21, GNA - The Royal Bank Foundation has supported the annual Sheik Sharubutu Ramadan Football Cup with a sum of GH₵ 30,000 as part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility to promote sports in the country.

The second edition of the competition billed for July 9 at the Wembley Park in Kotobabi, Accra is to promote peace and unity ahead of the General Elections in November.

The Ramadan Cup, which was won by Ashaiman in the maiden edition, is also to bring the communities together to climax the celebration of the Ramadan.

The event will see 12 teams in the Zongo communities made up of Nima, Mamobi, Ashaiman, Madina, Accra New Town, Alajo, Darkuman, New Fadama, Tudu, Shukura, Nsawam, and Sabon Zongo taking part in the football tournament.

Speaking at the launch, the Senior Vice President of Marketing, Research and Corporate Affairs of Royal Bank, Dr. Kwame Baah- Nuako, said his outfit was attracted to the initiative to promote peace in the country, saying that, ''we were attracted to the event because of the peace message. It is worst to have no peace in a country and we in the financial sector are interested in peace so that our business would thrive''.

He said Royal Bank was committed to contributing its quota to ensuring peace and urged groups and individuals not to allow people to use them to create violence.

''We will help them organize a successful competition and hope that the participants would be fair and disciplined, devoid of violence and I expect this competition to be competitive.''. He noted.

A former Black Stars player Tony Baffoe commended the Bank for the support and lauded the organisers for the initiative.

The event, which was chaired by the Dr. Sheik Yunus Mohammed, who represented the National Chief Imam, Sheik Nuhu Sharubutu, saw dignitaries from the Islamic fraternity and a representative of the Ghana Football Association, Linnear Addy, in attendance.

The defending champions Ashaiman will battle New Fadama, with Accra New Town taking on Alajo. Mamobi will slug it out with Madina whiles Darkuma faces Tudu.

Saabon Zongo will engage Nima with Shukura playing against Nsawam Zongo for the first round of matches.
