Black Stars: Emile Heskey relates Ghana's tournament performance to England

Former England international, Emile Heskey says Ghana's inability to meet expectations during major tournaments is synonymous to that of the Three Lions of England.

It's been almost three and half decades since the Black Stars last won a tournament (Africa Cup of Nations) in the continent, and worse can be said of England (last won a tournament in 1966) despite the two nations always presenting quality players.

Emile Heskey fumbles to understand the actual problem, but reckons it is down to lack of the nerves required at the biggest stage of football.

"Football has developed and every team is strong. I have seen a couple teams play and I must say every team is difficult," Heskey said at a post-match press conference after Vodafone Unity Match.

"When it comes to Africa Cup, I think the African countries have very strong teams; you probably have the same problem like England has where qualification isn't  a problem but performance at the actual tournament is the problem, and you can't tell whether it's nerves or what?"

Players are often vilified or tagged 'overhyped' after tournament football-loving fans describe as 'horrendous', but Heskey insists the players are very good and they have shown that at the World Cup.

"We can't say they are bad players. We haven't seen the best of the England national team despite the performance of the players in the league, and that Africa teams. Apart from the African Cup of Nations, we have seen the best of Ghanaian players in a World Cup," he noted.
