Tema, May 24, GNA - John Mawuli, winner of the Professional's Division of this year's Asantehene Gold Cup has appealed to the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) to put in place measures to make the game of golf more attractive to the youth.

He said the provision of free golf kits, educational scholarships and other incentives would entice the youth to play the game.

The Asantehene Gold Cup winner made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency at Tema, on Monday.

He said "golf, apart from making one healthy, also had many benefits. It creates friendship, makes one travel Worldwide and also links one to the business world.

He said it's about time the game was made more popular among the youth by introducing it at the basic level of education through to the tertiary level.

'Golf is one of the successful games you can play at an old age' he said, adding that, 'you cannot play tennis when you are old, you cannot play basketball and other games like football when you are old'.

Mawuli, who is being sponsored by Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, Tang Palace Hotel and the Chinese Embassy, said playing golf keeps the youth away from indulging in all forms of negative tendencies and they must therefore be encouraged to take on the game.

The Professional golfer, who started his career at a tender age in 1992, turned professional in 1995.

He has won many trophies including the Senegal Open, Togo Open and had participated in a number of international competitions, including The British Open, Zimbabwe Tour and the Nationwide America Open.
