Sports News Today in history: John Mensah confirmed as Black Stars captain
MAY 10, 2016 LISTEN

The Ghana Football Association on 10th May, 2011 confirmed John Mensah as the substantive captain of the Black Stars.

The Sunderland ace was in acting role after Stephen Appiah quit international football in 2010.

However, the Ghana Football Association in order to ensure stability in the leadership of the playing body confirmed John Mensah as the substantive captain

'As far as we are concerned, there has never been an issue of captain and deputy. John is our substantive captain and since Appiah retired, he's been working in that capacity,' FA Vice-President Fred Pappoe said.

'We've heard in sections of the media about this particular matter, but there is no issue at all. He is well-respected in the team and he is shown beyond reasonable doubt that he has massive qualities and he will continue to lead the nation in that capacity.'

The Black Stars captaincy row destroyed the team when Kwasi Appiah was stripped of the armband and handed to Abedi Pele in 1991, so the Ghana FA has since been exercising much caution in dealing with the captaincy of the Black Stars.
