Madrid, April 29, (GNA/dpa) - Serena Williams has joined her sister Venus in skipping the Madrid Masters after the draw made on Friday for the WTA portion of the event held together with the men.

With 35-year-old Venus withdrawing a few days ago, her world number one younger sister joined her on the sidelines.

Serena Williams reported that she had influenza and would not cross the Atlantic to play.

The decision from a player who has not competed in a month leaves Williams with Rome, starting May 9, as the lone tuneup prior to the May 22 kick-off of the French Open.

Serena Williams has not won a title in more than eight months since her last success in Cincinnati in August. She lost finals in Melbourne and Indian Wells this season and exited in the Miami fourth round.

Agnieszka Radwanska moved into the top seed position for the event which start on Saturday.
