Medeama coach Tom Strand pulled out Malik Akowuah during their 2-0 win over Al Shendi to avoid being suspended for their crunch play-off in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Akowuah, 26, is currently on a yellow card, meaning a further cautioning will rule him out of the first leg tie on the weekend of May 6-8.

The former Ashantigold combative midfielder has emerged as perhaps the side's most important player this season, churning out impressive displays week-in-and week-out.

Swedish coach Tom Strand acted smart by replacing him with Eric Kwakwa in the second half with visible signs he could be cautioned after several warnings.

He will be available for the first leg clash against a yet to be known opponent next month.

The West Africans are cruising high in the continental competition, beating Libyan side Al Ittihad and the Sudanese side to reach the crucial play-off.
