Prem: Leicester stun City, Spurs 2nd, Reds held

Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with an incredible 3-1 win over Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.

Claudio Ranieri’s men went in front inside three minutes, Robert Huth’s shot from close range deflecting off Martin Demichelis and beyond goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Leicester doubled their advantage early in the second half when Riyad Mahrez embarked on a brilliant run before lashing the ball home.

Huth grabbed his second of the game in the 60th minute with the centre-back meeting Christian Fuchs’ corner to loop a header into the top corner.

City did score a consolation with three minutes remaining when Sergio Aguero nodded in from substitute Bersant Celina’s cross.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed to second in the table as they overcameWatford 1-0 at White Hart Lane.

Dele Alli came off the substitutes’ bench to provide the assist for Spurs’ winning goal, the midfielder finding Kieran Trippier at the back post with a terrific pass.

Liverpool threw away a two-goal lead as Jermain Defoe struck late forSunderland in front of a restless Anfield with the game ending 2-2.

Reds manager  Jurgen Klopp missed the match after it was announced he has come down with suspected appendicitis, while home supporters began leaving the game after the 77th minute due to a dispute over ticket prices .

After a goalless first half, Roberto Firmino put Liverpool 1-0 up on 59 minutes when he nodded in at the back post from James Milner’s delivery.

Firmino then turned provider to unselfishly square for Adam Lallana, who finished past goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

Sunderland pulled a goal back with eight minutes left on the clock when Adam Johnson’s low free kick had the better of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

And a late point was salvaged when Defoe swivelled and shot past Mignolet in the 89th minute.

Everton made it back-to-back league victories as they cruised to a 3-0 win over out-of-form Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Romelu Lukaku broke the deadlock for Everton on 11 minutes, converting from the penalty spot after Tom Cleverley was felled in the box by goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Everton right-back Seamus Coleman made it 2-0 to the visitors when he headed in from Cleverley’s corner.

The Toffees continued to impress with Aaron Lennon extending their lead before half-time, the winger pouncing on a mistake before racing clear and keeping his cool in front of goal.

Bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa claimed their third league win of the season as they beat fellow strugglers Norwich City 2-0 at Villa Park.

Villa went in front just before the half-time whistle when Joleon Lescott headed home from Carles Gil’s delivery.

Gabriel Agbonlahor made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when the striker slotted in after latching on to Ashley Westwood’s pass.

Newcastle United are out of the relegation zone after a 1-0 success againstWest Bromwich Albion at St James’ Park.

Moments after having a goal ruled out for offside, Newcastle went in front as Aleksandar Mitrovic latched on to Jonjo Shelvey’s pass before clinically finishing past goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Crystal Palace brought an end to their five-game losing steak as they secured a 1-1 draw against Francesco Guidolin’s Swansea City.

A superb free kick by Gylfi Sigurdsson put Swansea 1-0 up, the midfielder curling a classy effort beyond goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

But Palace hit back three minutes into the second through defender Scott Dann, who beat goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski from close range for his fifth top-flight goal of the season.
